iRacing Spa 24H: RSR Purple Podiums, Red Fights to 11th

Two McLarens, One 24-Hour Track, Two Different Wars

This past weekend we sent two McLaren 720S GT3s into the iRacing Spa 24H — RSR Red and RSR Purple — and came away with the kind of result that validates everything we do at the shop. RSR Purple drove a smart, disciplined race to a podium finish. RSR Red fought back from 25th on the grid to finish 11th after absorbing damage that cost it a shot at the top five. Both results tell the same story: endurance racing rewards preparation, pace, and the ability to adapt when the race stops going to plan.

RSR Red: Fast Everywhere, Unlucky Once

RSR Red started 25th in a stacked 48-car field and immediately went to work. Early pace put the car into the top 20, then the top 15, with our top two drivers repeatedly posting the fastest lap on track every time they climbed in. That’s not a fluke — it’s what happens when a driver lineup has genuine pace depth across every stint, not just in qualifying trim.

Every driver in the Red car ran a strong, consistent average pace over the full 24 hours, which is the real currency in an event like Spa. But a bit of unlucky contact brought a few minutes of repair time, and at Spa — where the touring grid is dense and the pack rarely spreads out — a couple of minutes is the difference between a top five and finishing outside it. RSR Red climbed all the way to 11th by the checkered flag, which given the damage and the depth of the field, is a genuinely strong result. The team drove the entire race like a car with something to prove, and it showed.

RSR Purple: Strategy, Discipline, and a Podium Held to the Line

RSR Purple started further up, in 12th, and used a combination of strong pace and smart fuel strategy to climb into the top five in the early hours. From there, the approach shifted from attacking to managing — clean stints, minimal contact, and disciplined gap control to the cars behind while looking for any opportunity to close on the cars ahead. That podium position, once earned, held for the rest of the race.

What makes this result stand out is the circumstance behind it. RSR Purple ran the full 24 hours with only three drivers after a last-minute driver injury forced the team to adapt on short notice. Three-driver stints at Spa for 24 hours is a brutal ask — less rest, more fatigue management, and zero margin for a mistake born of tiredness. Holding a podium under those conditions is exactly what endurance racing is supposed to test: not just who’s fastest, but who can adapt when the plan falls apart and still execute.

The Real Lesson of a 24-Hour Race

Sprint races reward outright speed. Endurance races reward the team that can sustain that speed, manage the inevitable curveballs — contact, fatigue, a driver dropping out days before the green flag — and still be there at the end with the car intact and the pace strong. RSR Red’s 11th-place finish and RSR Purple’s podium are two different versions of the same lesson: find your limits, push beyond them, learn from what goes wrong, and keep evolving. That’s not a slogan for us — it’s literally how we approach every 24-hour entry.

While both crews were battling at Spa, Shayne piloted RSR’s Dark/Motion development simulator to an 11th-place finish of his own, running a detailed custom tune for the McLaren 720S on the motion rig and direct-drive wheelbase. The simulator ran flawlessly for the entire 24 hours — no hardware faults, no dropouts, nothing to troubleshoot mid-stint. Just a rig doing exactly what it’s engineered to do under race conditions for a full day straight.

That’s the part of this weekend that matters most to anyone considering a build with us. This wasn’t a demo unit or a marketing exercise — it was our own Dark/Motion simulator under genuine 24-hour endurance load, carrying a competitive tune into a real field.
